On January 21, 2010, Toyota issued a recall affecting 2.3 million vehicles due to a problem with the gas pedal sticking. Days later, a separate recall was issued, adding 1.1 million vehicles to a recall originally issued in November 2009. This recall was announced after problems with the vehicles’ floor mats were interfering with the gas pedal and were linked to several serious accidents.

Congress Speaks Out
According to Reuters.com:
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman said he would hold a hearing next month to consider “how quickly and effectively” the car maker responded to complaints about sticking pedals and slipping floormats.
“Like many consumers, I am concerned by the seriousness and scope of Toyota’s recent recall announcements,” Waxman said in a statement.
The Toyota sales moratorium and related recall of 5.4 million U.S. vehicles also has tarnished the reputation of the carmaker known for safety and reliability.
