Due to the changing financial landscape related to the rising cost of gas and government regulations on emissions standards, the need for fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles has influenced consumer buyer decisions on their car purchases. Just think: a car that gets 20 MPG and one that gets 30 MPG can amount to a $683 per year price difference (assuming 15,000 miles of driving annually at a fuel cost of $2.73).
With that in mind, Johnny Londoff Chevrolet would like to present the following tips on what to look for when making your next vehicle purchase.
- Turn the ignition key all the way to the left. We’ve all been there: you arrive at a family member or friend’s place and they aren’t ready, so you sit in your car and wait…with the engine running. Letting your engine idle while not moving means you’re getting a whopping 0 miles per gallon. Next time, turn your vehicle off to save valuable gas and money.
- Bigger Isn’t Always Better. You know what they say: the bigger the vehicle, the safer you’ll be when driving it. It’s a nice thought to have piece of mind but with the increased vehicle size, you’re facing less than ideal fuel mileage. For a complete list of crash test ratings on vehicles that may offer better fuel efficiency and safety, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) has the rundown.
- Keep Your Scheduled Maintenances. A well-maintained vehicle will operate with greater efficiency and improve performance. A simple clogged fuel filter may mean the difference of a few miles per gallon and an inflated personal gas budget. Your owner’s manual in the glove box can save you quite a bit of money if you simply follow its recommendations.
- Grind Those Gears. While it may not be the most obvious tip out there, it’s one that can save you gas mileage: drive in the highest gear you can, especially on the highways. Simply put, your vehicle starts in the lowest gear possible. When it’s in a lower gear, your vehicle generates more fuel consumption. By driving in a higher gear and de-selecting the “sport” option (if you’re navigating an automatic that features that option), you’ll burn less in both fuel consumption and dollars in your wallet.
Johnny Londoff Chevrolet hopes that these tips will help guide you in your next motor vehicle purchase. With such fuel-efficient vehicles as the 2011 Chevy Cruze and the 2011 Chevy Traverse available, Johnny Londoff Chevrolet knows how important it is to protect the environment and give our customers the best options available to attaining that goal.

Gas prices continue to fluctuate and we have put together a list of tips to help you be fuel efficient while keeping your vehicle running in the best condition.
1) Regularly check the maintenance on your vehicle to keep it running at its top performance. We recommend every three months. By having regular maintenance checks, you are able to keep your battery, spark plugs and air filters in the best running condition which will improve the gas mileage in the long run.
2) Use the proper oil for your vehicle and make sure to use the manufacturer’s recommended grade of motor oil. Energy conserving oil is available which reduces friction.
3) Use lower octane gasoline unless your vehicle requires specific gasoline. By purchasing the lowest grade of gasoline appropriate for your car will save on costs.
4) Do not top off when you’re pumping gas even though it’s always nice to pump your gas right on the dollar, but after the nozzle clicks, the extra gas you’re pumping in is useless. The tank will be too full and it’ll seep out. Gasoline will evaporate from the tank if you are missing a gas cap or it is not tightened properly.
5) As much as possible, park your vehicle in the shade. Direct sunlight also causes your gasoline to evaporate as well.
6) Keep your tires inflated properly because under-inflated tires decrease a cars gas mileage and wear down quicker. Tires with low pressure have more resistance so the engine is going to work harder. Check your tire pressure once a month when your tires are cold and early in the morning.

Though gas prices historically rise in the summer, don’t be fooled into thinking that continuing to drive your old car will save you money – try looking into purchasing an affordable new car with great gas mileage.
This summer, gas prices may increase – when it’s warm outside, more people travel. When people travel, the demand for gasoline increases, which in turn, increases the price of gasoline. That doesn’t mean you should hold off on buying a car – in fact – your old car may burn more gasoline that you think; old tires, dirty air filters, bad spark plugs, and leaky fuel injectors can all attribute to poor fuel efficiency.
Purchasing an affordable, fuel efficient car can dramatically decrease the amount of money you pump into your gas tank each year. Not only will you want an economical car, but one that meets your needs. Just because it is fuel efficient doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice trunk space, head room, and comfort.
The Chevrolet Cobalt’s gas mileage offers 37 miles per gallon which is better standard highway than any other compact coupe and can travel up to 480 miles on single fill up – that means you can drive from St. Louis to Green Bay, Wisconsin on a single tank of gas.
A car that gets 20 miles per gallon and one that gets 30 miles per gallon uses $688 more in gasoline per year; that’s over $3000 in excess fuel costs for five years.
Purchasing a new vehicle can be a time consuming, and often times, difficult decision. Be sure to take your time, do your research, and buy from a trusted dealer.

Whether you drive a car, truck, van, or SUV, choosing a fuel-efficient model can help save you a lot of money in the long run. You don’t have to purchase a hybrid to get better fuel economy- though they are the most fuel efficient vehicles today.
Before purchasing a fuel-efficient car, there’s a few questions you need to ask yourself in order to determine which type of car is best for you:
1) Do you need a car to commute for work or just to run errands?
2) How many passengers on average will be in your vehicle?
3) Which model best fits your budget?
4) What kind of car do you like the best?
Be sure to take some time to do your research- purchasing a vehicle is one of the most important decision you’ll make!
